I think you should go for a cut instead of highlights because sometimes highlights can look fake and if you don't like them you're kinda stuck with them for a little while. And with a cut you can do different things with a cut. But highlights you cant change them.

I have dark blond hair, no red highlights at the moment, but I have done that before! I had my stylist put both blond and red highlights in and I loved it! The only thing with red highlights is that they tend to fade quicker than any other highlight color. Also, I wouldn't recommend doing red highlights at home. Any of the at-home red highlights I've seen have been pretty scary!
