Yes. If you go darker, it will only make it much harder to return to a light shade, no matter if it is your natural color or not. I have had my hair professionally dyed for 10+ years blond, and now if I wanted to go dark, it would take a lot of work, and I couldn't even get back to this color (says my colorist).

If you wanted to gradually go a little darker, you could have you stylist put in some lowlites, but make sure that they put on a filler first, or else the lowlites would fade out almost immediately.
